This special FAQ is designed to explain the naming of "shippings". It's recommended to read this before participating in this subboard. Remember to check out general shipping FAQ for more general information, and the list of universal shipping names
1. What is a "shipping"?
A shipping is a noun for the concept of two cats from the series in a romantic relationship. So "Sandstorm/Firestar" would be a canon shipping, because it actually exists in the books. There are also noncanon shippings, which are made up relationships that don't exist in the books, like "Ravenpaw/Sandstorm".
2. What is a "shipping name"?
A shipping name is an alternate reference to these relationships. Instead of going "I support Sandstorm/Firestar!" you might use the official shipping name: "I support Gingershipping!". Shipping names are just for fun, and there is no requirement for using them.
Rules for shipping names: ONE word followed by the word "shipping". The first word is capitalized, and is not a compound word (exceptions may apply).
3. How are the shippings named?
Shippings are named on Ww via polls. Members create threads and brainstorm possible names they'd like to give the shipping, and when enough are brainstormed, someone PMs Blizz to ask for an official poll. An official poll is created in the main shippings board and everyone votes on their favorite. The winner becomes the official name and is added to the universal shipping names index.
4. So like, are shipping names a contest or something?
No! It's not a contest, it's just a fun way to give special value to our favorite shippings!
If you're still not completely sure how it works (or even if you are sure) you might want to try participating on the brainstorming threads before creating your own thread.
